MAPPA Studio is releasing the second season of Vinland Saga in January 2023. As the historical manga Vinland Saga canceled the finale of its first season in December 2019, fans are eagerly awaiting to see more of Thorfinn’s life.
The story is roughly based on actual historical events of the time, although it takes many liberties with its characters and events. Vinland Saga has published 24 episodes up to its 54 chapters. Here is the summary of the Vinland saga.
“Vinland Saga is originally set mainly in 1013 AD England, which was largely conquered by the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard. As King Sweyn nears death, his sons, Prince Harald and Prince Knut, quarrel over his successor. The story draws elements from historical accounts of the period such as The Flateyjarbók, The Saga of the Greenlanders and The Saga of Eric the Red.”
The Vinland Saga Season 2 trailer features a flashback to Thorfinn’s time working under Askeladd. The trailer begins with Askeladd’s voice telling Thorfinn to get up.
The Vinland Saga Season 2 trailer features a recap of the first season. Thorfinn remembers being a warrior against the soldiers who came to the village and severely tortured them. They are like wild beasts, wear human masks and brutally kill the villagers and children.
He whispers, “I can’t remember how many people… I’ve been on the battlefield since I was five or six years old. I was a warrior.”
“A long time ago, soldiers came twice to the village where I lived. Those guys… the animals… in human flesh!”
The first season ended with Leif Erikson in the process of convincing the badly beaten Thorfinn to sail away with him, but the boy returns to the Imperial Council. The war between England and the Danes is getting worse every year. Canute takes the lead and claims dominion over England and the Viking army. Thorfinn is dragged away, and as he drops his knife into the chaos, his once journey flashes in the blade’s reflection. The episode ends with shots of several previously unseen characters in different locations.
Vinland Saga Season 2 will adapt the manga’s Farm Arc or Ketil’s Farm Arc. Ketil is a rich farmer who treats his slaves well. He works on Ketil’s farm. Olmar and Thorgil are the sons of Ketil. Snake will help Thorfinn move on from his dark past and is encouraged by dreams of his father Thors. He was Thorfinn’s father’s old friend.
The first season of the anime was produced by WIT Studio. The second season will be moved from WIT to MAPPA. Shūhei Yabuta and Takahiko Abiru will return as director and character designer, respectively. Most of the cast from the second season of the anime will likely return in the second season of the Vinland Saga. These include Yûto Uemura (as Thorfinn), Kenshô Ono (as Canute), and Akio Ôtsuka (as Thorkell).
Vinland Saga Season 2 is scheduled to air in January 2023 on Tokyo MX (at 12:30am), BS11 (at 12:30am), Gifu Broadcasting (at 12:30am) and AT-X (at 8:00pm) premiere ). Global audiences can access Vinland Saga Season 2 on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll, but the broadcast date has yet to be announced.
