Spain vs. Costa Rica World Cup line-up, seed 11 for Group E match in Qatar 2022

Spain will be cognizant of opponents Costa Rica’s penchant for a World Cup shock before the sides play their opening Group E game on Wednesday.

Eight years ago, Costa Ricans beat Uruguay and Italy and drew against England to get out of a group containing all three before reaching the quarter-finals.

With Germany and Japan also in their group this time, Spain can’t afford to fall victim to a similarly surprising result at Al Thumama Stadium.

Below are the expected lineups for both teams.

Line-up Spain vs. Costa Rica

Luis Enrique has insisted he won’t play favorites when picking his line-up against Costa Rica.

The 52-year-old is using the training sessions as a guide before picking a side for Spain’s opening game in Group E.

“I will only pick players who are fully fit and able to cope with the intensity of the training here,” he said.

“I still don’t have my 11 for Costa Rica, but I have a little idea.”

Spain forecasts from June 11

Estimated line-up for Spain (4-3-3, right to left): 23 Simon (GK) — 20 Carvajal, 4 P Torres, 24 Laporte, 18 Alba — 26 Pedri, 5 Busquets, 9 Gavi — 11 F Torres, 7 Morata, 22 sarabia

  • Injured: Guillamon
  • Exposed: none

With Ferran Torres and Alvaro Morata Enrique looks like certain starters on the right wing/front, but Enrique’s biggest decision may be on the left side of his attack.

Ansu Fati, Marco Asensio and Pablo Sarabia are all in the running, with the latter perhaps the most likely to win given its involvement in recent grids.

Costa Rica expected from May 11th

(4-3-3, from right to left): 21 Navas (GK) — 12 C Martinez, 17 Calvo, 5 Duarte, 13 Oviedo — 9 Tejeda, 23 Bennette, 8 G Torres — 7 Borges, 10 Contreras, 11 Campbell

  • Injured: none
  • Exposed: none

Costa Rica have no injury concerns ahead of the opener and can field an experienced line-up to take on the might of Spain.

Keylor Navas is on course for his 108th cap between the posts, while Celso Borges will extend a national team record with his 156th appearance.
