She Said: Plot, Cast, Release Date In Harvey Weinstein’s New Investigative Movie

It was the investigation that rocked the entertainment world and sparked the #MeToo movement: On October 5, 2017, The New York Times published an article detailing years of sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein. It was written by Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, two US journalists who won the Pulitzer Prize for public service for their efforts.

Now her 2019 book She Said, which aims to unravel the explosive story, has been made into a film starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan. Here’s everything there is to know about the film, which is poised to be one of the strongest releases of this year.

what did she say about

She Said follows Twohey and Kantor’s investigation, from alerting journalists that actress Rose McGowan was sexually assaulted by Weinstein to their efforts to speak to other victims (most of whom included Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow , originally wanted to keep off the record), to fending off attempts at appeasement by Weinstein’s lawyers, to working with other victims, to pressure.

It is based on the 2019 book of the same name written by the journalists. Susan Faludi of the New York Times said of the book, “She Said reads a bit like a feminist All the President’s Men.”

Who is the team behind the film?

The film is directed by German director Maria Schrader, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for her 2020 Netflix miniseries Unorthodox.

Dede Gardner, who produced the Oscar-winning films Selma, 12 Years a Slave, Vice and Moonlight, is alongside Jeremy Kleiner, who also worked on 12 Years a Slave, Moonlight and Vice” worked as a producer on the film. Brad Pitt, who was dating Paltrow at the time of her attack, was also reported as the film’s producer.

What is the release date?

She Said is set for a UK release on November 25th.

Who is in the cast of She Said?

British actor Carey Mulligan plays Twohey and Zoe Kazan plays Kantor. Mulligan has been more selective with her acting roles lately and only made one film which was released last year – the British film about the 1939 Sutton Hoo dig in Suffolk, The Dig.

Kazan, meanwhile, starred in the 2021 Netflix miniseries Clickbait, the 2022 HBO Max series The Last Movie Stars, and the 2021 adult animated film Cryptozoo.

Intriguingly, during filming, director Schrader and her crew decided to ask some of the actors who had made allegations against Weinstein if they’d like to star in the film themselves – which made for an incredibly moving watch, but so is the whole thing more complicated made tricky build process.

According to the New York Times, Judd quickly agreed to play himself in the film. She said in a statement: “I am describing that Harvey Weinstein has been sexually harassing me since I came downstairs to the lobby of this hotel because my father was waiting for me there and said he could say something devastating had just happened to me … Playing myself in She Said is a natural progression.”

Judd was the only actor to go on record for the Oct. 5 New York Times article, a decision she apparently made just hours before the story went to print.

Survivors Sarah Ann Masse and Katherine Kendall also both have small roles in the film, and in the form of a phone conversation with Kantor, Paltrow is also in the film (according to the Times, this was a screenwriter’s decision rather than Paltrow’s).

Weinstein is played by Mike Houston, who has had roles in Boardwalk Empire, the Flesh and Bone miniseries and Orange Is the New Black – but Weinstein’s face is reportedly never shown in the film.

Is it factually correct?

The trailer describes the film as “inspired by actual events.” After all, months of research were condensed into the two-hour film, and although it’s based on the journalists’ own book, most of the conversations between the characters have been reinvented.

However, She Said, which was filmed in 2021, contains the entire footage of a 2015 New York police sting operation in which Weinstein molests Italian model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez. Producer Gardner told the Times, “I think it’s obviously an unusual and untraditional thing to throw a two-and-a-half minute thing in the middle of a movie… The deep bravery she showed was in preserving the whole thing.”

Zelda Perkins, who was one of Harvey Weinstein’s PAs for 20 years, was reportedly disappointed with the script when a copy was sent to her – she felt they were using her story (which is nine minutes long in the film) to help investigating issues that were beyond the reach of their own account. Perkins wasn’t attacked by Weinstein, but her colleague was. She was locked into non-disclosure agreements, but apparently reported Weinstein’s behavior to his company, Miramax, in 1998.

How did the filmmakers approach the film?

Making She Said was always a difficult task, and so early in the process, Schrader and her team decided there would be no depictions of assault or naked women. Weinstein would also exhibit only a small amount. Schrader told the Times, “We didn’t even have to debate it … I don’t have to add another rape scene to the world.”

The process was reportedly collaborative – Gardner spoke with Perkins for months, Schrader spent time with Judd and screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz visited survivor Laura Madden in Wales. The team also worked closely with some of the people who played fundamental roles in bringing the news story to fruition.

What do the reviews say?

The reviews have been incredibly positive for the most part. The Standard said: “She Said remains a miracle. It’s not smug or preachy and gives space to the non-glamorous characters, many of them men who helped Twohey and Kantor in their quest,” and the New York Times said, “There’s little here to be glorified or embellished. (New York City has rarely looked so blah.) …She Said instead focuses on the process and prioritizes the patient accumulation of testimonies and endorsements.”

However, the film did not do well at the US box office and was called a “flop” by Variety after opening with a $2.2 million debut in early November.

She Said will be released on November 25th
