War can be prevented by promoting social progress for the new generations, said Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

The Vatican Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations stressed this point Wednesday at the opening of the 98thth Assembly of the Union of Superiors General (Usg) held until November 25th in the Fraterna Domus of Sacrofano near Rome.

The USG Assembly

The three-day gathering will discuss the theme “Fratelli tutti: called to be artisans of peace,” taken from paragraph 225 of the Encyclical on Human Fraternity in which Pope Francis says that “in many parts of the world paths of peace are needed to heal open wounds” and emphasizes that “peacemakers are also needed, men and women willing to work courageously and creatively, to initiate processes of healing and re-encountering”.

The meeting will focus on the Church’s commitment to promoting peace in the world and in particular the joint commitment of the USG and the UISG (International Union of Women Superiors General) to peace, justice and integrity of creation, particularly through their formation programs for ordained Men and women.

Ensuring peace implies a total rejection of war and dialogue

In his opening speech, Archbishop Gallagher emphasized that the Church should only be committed to peace.

He pointed out that Pope Paul VI’s emphasis on to dialogue as the only means of achieving peace is continually expressed even today by Pope Francis, who has referred to the current global geopolitical situation, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, as “World War III”. .

Peace is not the simple absence of conflict

According to the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, “ensuring peace means, first of all, total rejection of war and seeking dialogue at all costs to help create a climate of growing trust that will open the way to a future guaranteed”. Likewise, “the foundations of peace must be secured,” which, he noted, “are not only the absence of conflict, but also the peaceful settlement of disputes between nations with regard to the observance of human rights, including the right to freedom of conscience, and Religion”.

The USG assembly ends on Saturday with a meeting at the Vatican with Pope Francis.

The Union of Superiors General

The Union of Superiors General (USG) is an international organization of the Superiors General of religious institutes or societies of apostolic life for men of pontifical right.

Since 1952, when the Superiors General met for the first time, it has been an international forum where they share experiences, exchange information and accompany one another in their ministry.

The purpose of the USG is to “promote the life and mission of each institute at the service of the Church, for more effective collaboration between them and for more fruitful contact with the Holy See and the Hierarchy”.
