CBS News reviews Hunter Biden’s scandalous laptop two years after he was fired

CBS News became the latest corporate media organization to confirm the authenticity of Hunter Biden’s scandal-plagued laptop on Monday, a reversal from the network that two years ago refused to take it seriously.

Hunter Biden’s laptop, first reported by the New York Post less than a month before the 2020 election, has been widely dismissed by mainstream print and television networks as unreliable and even Russian disinformation. In a shocking show of coordination, Twitter and Facebook blocked or restricted sharing of the New York Post article in an email contained in the laptop; Twitter even suspended the New York Post from their account for weeks.

It has since been authenticated by multiple outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, NBC News and Politico, and CBS joined the group this week.

FROM THE “SMOOTH CAMPAIGN” TO “RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION”, LIBERAL MEDIA HAVE TURNED UP TO REJECT THE HUNTER BIDEN STORY

“As Republicans take control of the House of Representatives, Hunter Biden, the President’s son, will be a target of investigations, and that means data from a laptop purportedly owned by Biden could be critical to the investigative process. CBS News obtained its data, not through a third party or political agent, but directly from the source, who told us they provided it to the FBI under subpoena,” said CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil. “We have an independent forensic review commissioned to establish its authenticity.”

CBS News then repeated what many other news outlets had already reported, saying there was “no evidence” that the laptop had been counterfeited or tampered with. CBS News claimed it wanted to “break the noise,” eventually declaring that the laptop, which contained reams of data, emails and other potentially harmful information about the president’s son, was legitimate.

According to the report, Republicans have pointed to a 2017 email about a proposed deal with a Chinese energy company that they say has raised questions about whether Joe Biden benefited. According to the report, no evidence has surfaced to suggest any wrongdoing by the president.

Following the report, CBS Mornings host Gayle King said maybe Hunter Biden should have just paid his laptop bill and avoided a lot of trouble.

The admission of the laptop’s legitimacy is a far cry from previous CBS News reports on the scandalous computer.

Veteran 60 Minutes journalist Lesley Stahl laughed at then-President Trump’s claim that Joe Biden was “in the middle of a scandal” in an interview that aired just days before the 2020 election.

“He isn’t,” Steel replied cheerfully.

“Of course he is, Lesley,” Trump doubled down sternly.

“No, come on,” Stahl further dismissed the president’s claim before lecturing him, “This is ’60 minutes,’ and we can’t wear things we can’t verify.”

She also told Trump that the laptop “cannot be verified.”

At some point during the campaign, CBS News correspondent Bo Erickson faced hostile reactions from other journalists, including one of his own colleagues, simply for asking about the laptop.

“My @CBSEveningNews report contains clear warnings about Giuliani and Russian disinformation,” then-CBS News White House correspondent Paula Reid tweeted, attempting to undermine the legitimacy of Erickson’s question to Biden.

CBS News did not immediately respond to a request for comment. CBS News also provided Hunter Biden with a platform to promote his book in 2021 with an interview that focused on his struggles with addictions and his efforts to make amends.

The laptop saga began in October 2020, when the New York Post reported on a 2015 email from a Ukrainian energy executive to Hunter Biden, thanking him for introducing him to his father, who introduced her to the Received hard drive from Biden’s laptop. Joe Biden was vice president at the time of the news, and his son held a lucrative position on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, at the time, raising concerns about attempted influence over his powerful father. Additional reports from the laptop have questioned Hunter Biden’s overseas business ties.

The laptop also contains a wealth of racy and adult videos and photos of Hunter Biden featuring a selection of women and using illegal drugs.

The younger Biden remains under federal investigation for his tax and business matters abroad.
