Ever since he was first teased in the final episode of Loki Season 1, Marvel fans have been counting down the days until Kang the Conqueror returned in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Now that San Diego Comic-Con has confirmed that Kang will be the next Thanos-level threat to face the MCU heroes – with the next Avengers title The Kang Dynasty – the third Ant-Man is sure to be hugely significant be for the franchise.

Release date of Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be released on February 17, 2023which will trigger the theatrical launch of the MCU next year.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige confirmed that the third Ant-Man film would be the first of Phase 5. While the film was originally intended to be released after The Marvels, the MCU release order was changed earlier in 2022.

The trailer stars MCU newcomers Bill Murray, Jonathan Majors (now as Kang the Conqueror) and Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang.

Compared to the previous two Ant-Man films, Quantumania seems much more central to the larger MCU. While the trailer showcases the humor and tone that fans have come to expect from the MCU, it also offers a much darker and more sinister narrative.

The film also seems to lean a lot more into sci-fi, bringing new creatures and characters into the universe.

The main cast and characters from the first two Ant-Man films will return for the third installment. They include Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer).

Other regular cast members like Luis (Michael Pena) and the “Wombats” have not been confirmed to return.

Newcomers to the series include Kathryn Newton, who will play an older version of Scott’s daughter, Cassie Lang (replacing Emma Fuhrmann, who played the role in Avengers: Endgame).

Jonathan Majors will portray Kang the Conqueror, the film’s villain. He reprises the role of Loki where he portrayed He Who Remains (widely speculated to be a variant of Kang). However, Kang will play a much bigger role in this film and is shaping up to be the MCU’s next big villain.

According to director Peyton Reed, the Majors’ villain will have a “profound impact on the MCU.”

“Jeff Loveness, who wrote this film, also writes The Kang Dynasty, so there was a lot of debate about the impact of this appearance of Kang The Conqueror. Great things are ahead,” he told Empire.

In addition, Bill Murray was cast for an undisclosed role. Ant-Man 3 has also been confirmed to feature the villain MODOK, rumored to be played by Jim Carrey or Corey Stoll.

The film’s official synopsis states, “Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne join Hope’s parents, Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, as they embark on a new adventure and explore the quantum realm.”

Not much more is known about this adventure, why they would venture into the Quantum Realm and how they would encounter Kang and MODOK in the Quantum Realm.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, actress Kathryn Newton hinted at what audiences can expect from Cassie Lang and how the character has changed since reuniting with her father following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

“She’s just trying to figure out how to be a good person and she makes a lot of mistakes. She’s quite a mess and so am I… You’ll definitely see some of it. But a good heart.”
