2022 FIFA World Cup optimized for Qatar Heat – NBC Boston

The 2022 FIFA World Cup got underway this week and the USA men’s soccer team takes on England on Thursday – but climate change could play a role in this year’s games.

The games are usually held in June and July, but the World Cup in Qatar was postponed five months later – to November – the cooler season. In 2015, five years after Qatar won the bid, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced the decision to play in the winter months as it was unsafe for players in the summer.

The country is home to some of the hottest summer temperatures in the world. An average temperature in July is 98°F and in August 100°C. With humidity in the 60’s, playing in these conditions would result in heat exhaustion and heat stress for athletes and staff at the venue, and for the estimated 1.2 million fans, that await the host country during the tournament couldn’t be easier.

Since the host location was announced in December 2010, the average annual temperature in Qatar has increased by 1.1°C.

When the host site was announced in December 2010, its average annual temperature was 28.85 °C (83.9 °F). Almost 12 years later, that temperature is now 85°F (29.42°C).

The desert climate has average temperatures in November and December between 22 and 22 °C. Doha is in a subtropical zone with little rainfall, hot and humid summers and mild winters. When the games kicked off on Sunday, the temperature was 24°C. Lows that day were 75°F.

While temperatures were well below summer averages, the brutal heat was made worse by high humidity with dew points in the upper 60’s.

These periods of extreme heat are becoming more and more frequent, among other things due to climate change.

Sunday’s high temperatures in the Middle East were likely blamed on climate change, according to the Climate Shift Index.

There is none inside Stadiums at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but the venue has spent billions to build seven air-conditioned, open-air stadiums. Tournament organizers say the quasi-climate-controlled environment will push temperatures to nearly 68°, despite the outside conditions.
